The College Board is proud to recognize three new Springboard Teachers of Distinction. This year’s winners, who have demonstrated effective teaching practices and successful implementation of Springboard in the classroom, are:
- Alyssa Broussard, a 6th grade English Language Arts teacher at LJ Alleman Middle School in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana
- Amanda Olinger, a 7th and 8th grade English Language Arts teacher at Harrisburg North Middle School, Harrisburg, South Dakota
- Larissa Perez, a 6th grade math teacher at Mater Academy Middle School in Hialeah Gardens, Florida
After a rigorous application process, these teachers were selected to represent and serve as model teachers for the SpringBoard program. SpringBoard is the College Board’s comprehensive instructional program in English Language Arts and Mathematics for all students in grades 6–12. Combining high-quality instructional materials, formative and summative assessments, and exemplary professional learning, SpringBoard prepares students for Advanced Placement and success in college and beyond.
For Teacher of Distinction Alyssa Broussard, the overall structure and layout of SpringBoard, informed by “backwards design,” has been the key motivator for her students. “Beginning with the end in mind seems like a simple idea, but it is one that helps students take ownership of their own learning,” she says. “It is so powerful that each day, students can leave class knowing exactly why we studied the concepts that we did and how/why they will use them in the future.”
Amanda Olinger also feels the SpringBoard curriculum has helped her students interact with literature and communication skills in a meaningful way. She says: “So often it is easy to become bogged down with the skills of what we want kids to be able to do that we forget to emphasize the life-lessons and inquiry for knowledge, but SpringBoard keeps those important learning objectives at the forefront.”
Larissa Perez says her passion allows her students to make connections and find a hidden love for math. “I love when in the middle on a lesson my students say, ‘Mrs. Perez you just blew my mind, what’s next?’ Comments like that are what make me love what I do and want to continue doing it.”
These three Teachers of Distinction will become members of the SpringBoard teacher advisory council; they will have the opportunity to review new materials, participate in pilot opportunities, and attend the SpringBoard Pre-Conference and AP Annual Conference.
“These teachers not only exemplify teaching excellence, but they also provide every student with the opportunity to become an effective citizen within their school and community,” said Auditi Chakravarty, vice president of SpringBoard and Pre-AP Programs at the College Board.
We salute these students for providing a meaningful and nurturing educational environment that promotes academic achievement for students.
