“One of a kind…valuable…fun…the most amazing experience of my life.” These are a few ways that students came to describe their experience this summer in the new Language LEAP (Learning, Engaging, Applying, Propelling): Chinese Program.
The College Board’s Language LEAP program is a summer language immersion program designed to help students build on the essential skills needed to succeed in their Advanced Placement (AP) Chinese classes.
More than 400 applicants from 32 institutions across the U.S. submitted to be a part of the program focusing on language courses, participating in related lectures and cultural activities, and working on group projects aligned with their learning objectives.
“I came into the program not even thinking of enrolling in AP, but after taking part I can now say that I am more confident to take AP,” a student commented.
Students began the program by taking the HSK Level III tests for placement into one of four classes according to their language ability. After the two-week program, these same students on average scored nearly 20 points higher.
“I think this program is a great opportunity. My speaking and listening skills have improved more in these two weeks than in a semester of class,” said a student.
About 60 high school students and educators representing various school districts throughout the U.S. completed the Pre-AP immersion program hosted at Beijing Language and Culture University campus.
“The LEAP program is by far the most valuable experience that I’ve gained,” a student noted. “Not only has it opened up doors for me academically, it has allowed me to experience a whole other culture across the globe.”
Many thanks to the school districts who participated: Barrington High School (IL), Bellevue School District (WA), Center for Global Studies (CT), Houston ISD (TX), and Philadelphia School District (PA).
