Listen Now! All In Webinar: Student and Counselor Success StoriesAbby Hexter, Associate Director of Member Communications, The College Board
On Thursdsay, January 29, the College Board hosted a webinar featuring two rock-star school counselors and their students. School Counseling Department Chair Jeremy Goldman and junior De’Aja Davis from Pikesville High School in Pikesville, MD were joined by Guidance Department Chair Claudette Reid and senior Shatoria Forte from Blake High School in Tampa, FL to discuss about the role that school counselors play to get more students of color to enroll in Advanded Placement (AP) courses . Jennifer Dunn, Director of Membership Mobilization at the College Board moderated the lively discussion.
Jeremy and De’Aja discussed Pikesville’s #PHSfit initiative, the importance of using digital resources, and a powerful partnership with AVID—just a few specific strategies that the Maryland high school has implemented to increase AP enrollment for African American, Latino, and Native American students.
Claudette outlined several strategies that have worked for her students at Blake, and focused on the importance of the performing arts school’s Open Access approach to AP. Shatoria recounted her own experiences in her AP classes, and offered advice for students not sure where to start when it comes to taking AP.
