The Guidance and Admission Assembly Council (GAAC) met in New York City, May 13–14, 2014. The GAAC is a group of member professionals that considers issues and actions related to providing educational opportunities for all students at crucial transition points in their academic experience to help them succeed whenever or however they enter higher education. During the GAAC’s most recent meeting in May, the council discussed several important issues. The National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA) has named Shirley Ort, associate provost and director of scholarships and student aid at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and vice chair of the College Board’s Board of Trustees, a Most Valuable Professional. This honor is given to NASFAA members who stand out as exemplars in the financial aid community. Shirley has served on NASFAA’s Reimagining Aid Design and Delivery Task Force, National Conference Committee, and Graduate and Professionals Issues Committee.
New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez and New Mexico Secretary of Education Hanna Skandera announced on April 28 that the College Board would be investing $1 million in the state’s AP® program. Combined with the $750,000 in state funding that Martinez secured during the 2013 legislative session, this investment will go toward AP teacher preparation and recruitment, training counselors on how to guide students toward AP, and developing parent resources in several languages.
The All In campaign is a partnership between the College Board and its members to dramatically increase the number of AP-ready African American, Latino, and Native American students who enroll in college-level AP® courses. Since its launch last year, the campaign has made great strides in reaching its goal of enrolling 100 percent of students with demonstrated potential, in at least one AP course.
