Department of Defense Investment Helps National Math and Science Initiative Expand AP Access to Military-Connected Students Across the Country

Thanks to a $4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), an additional 44 high schools in 11 states are receiving an unprecedented level of support from the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) and the College Board to increase student success in Advanced Placement (AP).

Last fall, eleven school districts across the country partnered with the College Board to run the Official SAT Practice Student Ambassadors Pilot Program. Throughout the year, over 100  students engaged with their classmates and communities to spread the word about Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy.

Kentucky Students Use Their AP Courses to Solve Real-World Problems

Students at The J. Graham Brown School and duPont Manual High School in Louisville, Kentucky, are doing more in their AP classrooms than learning college-level material in high school. Through the College Board’s AP with WE Service Program, they’re using their AP experience to help the world.

Ad Astra, a course scheduling an enrollment management organization hosted a free webinar last week talking about the value of the standardized tests in predicting student retention, grade inflation, and discrepant achievement. Panelists included Measuring Success co-editor Lynn Letukas and Edgar Sanchez, a co-author of a chapter in the book.

On March 19, more than 200 students and teachers from across New York State visited the Capitol building to meet with nearly 60 legislators and advocate for funding to expand students’ access to Advanced Placement by adding courses – including at rural high schools – and covering exam fees for low-income students.

Now in its second year, SAT Practice Kickoff Week is a global challenge to schools and districts to get students to link their College Board and Khan Academy accounts and access their personalized SAT study plan on Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy.

The College Board Fellowship Program application is now live! The program identifies, recognizes, and rewards rising leaders who are especially effective in closing the achievement and attainment gaps that separate African American, Latino, Asian Pacific and Native American students from their white peers. Members are invited to check out the application and share the information with potential candidates.
